Highway 18 Closure to Impact Commute

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced a full-highway closure of Highway 18 between Highway 138 and Lake Gregory Drive — also known as The Narrows.

The closure will begin on Tuesday, Feb. 11 and conclude on Friday, Feb. 14. Each day access will be prohibited through The Narrows from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

According to Caltrans Public Information Officer Emily Leinen, upbound and downbound traffic will be rerouted through Crestline by way of a Caltrans-implemented flagging operation. Caltrans crews will be positioned at the intersections of Lake Gregory Drive and Highway 18, as well as, Highway 138 and Highway 18.

Leinen tried to ease concern about the possibility of traffic backing up in Top Town, Crestline.

“Motorists can either wait in a queue to be escorted through, or they can use an alternative route such as Lake Gregory Drive [to Lake Drive] to Highway 138,” Leinen stated.

Additionally, she cautioned that queue times may be up to 30 minutes in length and that commuters should plan accordingly.

Caltrans crews will be performing rock scaling and splitting work in The Narrows to address what Leinen called “significant rockslides,” which resulted from recent storms.

“Crews climb the mountain and push rocks down. These rocks are then removed from the area by using a plow or bulldozer,” Leinen stated about the process.
